The Meaning of European Civilization - A Historical-Conceptual Approach*

My interest in the idea of civilization was triggered by Samuel Huntington's now famous content "The Clash of Civilizations" from 1993. I have been focusing on different discursive adjustments of European self-consciousness for a few times . The thought of Europe as an entitity or perhaps a quality includes a rather long background in European countries. In the 15th century the idea of Europe (which, previously, largely had been mounted on geographical representations of a tripartite world composed of European countries, Asia and Africa/Libya) was formed within a spiritual discourse which equated European countries with (western) Christianity. Christianity became the main value of "Europe". Christianity included a trans-nationwide - to employ an anachronistic term - reference and a good global pretension, while "European countries" marked a limit to a non-European universe. Connecting "Europe" and "Christianity" dished up both to strengthen the thought of an intra-European coherence and a borderline to a non-European and, therefore, also non-Christian environment. Historically, this connection took form within an anti-Islamic crusader discourse where the Ottoman Empire was designed to represent the negative attributes of non-Europe.

The growing rationalisation of the European says influenced this is of "Europe". The 16th century witnessed an evergrowing utilization of the concept of Europe within an international political context. Circumstances discourse replaced the spiritual discourse. States commenced to "speak" to the other person on a formalised picture that was referred to as "Europe". "Europe" was much less a religious value and more something of criss-crossing relations (army, economic ,diplomatic and possibly legal relations - hat had been contained within ideas of international laws). The Europe-as-a-system concept focused on express rationalism (raison d'tat). But this value
